No Need to Mull it Over Click to download 2008 Wassail Program The Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association (PECWA) is delighted to announce an entertaining WASSAIL celebration for 2008. We invite you to come a-wassailing amongst our wineries, cidery and brewery again this year, helping us toast the end of another growing season with the burying of our vines before the full arrival of winter's blast. Participating wineries will welcome visitors from near and far on both weekends November 22 and 23 and November 29 and 30. WASSAIL KICK OFF GALA. Thursday, November 20th, 2008 at the Waring Hall from 6:00-8:00pm PECWA has taken the olde Engish tradition of wassailing (drinking toasts to apple orchards at the beginning of the winter season) and adapted it to our pre-winter vineyard realities, in an attempt to brighten the sullen skies of November with a little frivolity and cheer. Our visitors are encouraged to take on the role of wassailing revelers, roaming from winery to winery, singing, sampling wine and food. To take us all in is probably a two-day project; a great November weekend get-away. There is no cover charge. Small tasting fees will vary from location to location and wine will be for sale. WASSAIL ROYALTY The wineries will be festooned for the upcoming holiday season, with lights and merry decor, and in addition to providing samples of their fine wines will offer mulled wines (heated and seasoned white and red wines), spiced ciders and special beers for tasting along with comfort food munchies. Many will have recently released wines available for seasonal gifts and entertaining. MULLED WINE COMPETITION In addition, most wineries will offer a broad range of diversions such as art and quilt exhibits, wreath making and other products of local artisans.. A full program of events will be available by early November. As this is a daytime activity we will be encouraging our visitors to participate in a variety of happenings in the County after wassailing with us, including Countylicious, the Regent Theatre Gala, and the Festival of Trees. It is thought that "WASSAIL" (was'sail) derives from a roadside greeting meaning "Be in Good Health" first brought to England from Denmark in the 8th Century.
